Battling loneliness among children and youth: A resource for parents on children's friendships

Loneliness is on the rise in Australia, particuluarly among children and youth. A report published by Reach Out on International Day of Friendship 2023 found 1 in 2 young people are concerned, stressed or worried about feeling lonely, highlighting a perceived lack of support from friends and family.

Close relationships are vital for our wellbeing. Research has shown that loneliness can lead to severe mental and physical health issues when left unaddressed. It's important that we support children in developing close friendships at a young age and empower them with the social and emotional skills they need to maintain and strengthen these friendships.

Ensuring parents and carers have trustworthy resources to help them pinpoint social struggles in children is an essential first step.
